Head of Design

“The best minds of my generation are spent trying to make people click ads. That sucks.” — Jeffrey Hammerbacher, founder of Cloudera, on why he left Facebook.

We are Toronto’s best kept secret— a company of intelligent, creative and driven technology professionals working for civic and social good.

We are passionate about making public libraries accessible, delightful and engaging. A lot of companies tout ‘social impact’, but at BiblioCommons we serve 6 million diverse users each month, helping them access the library’s collections and services in their communities. Libraries are more than just book stacks — they are public spaces that foster learning, connection, and community in an increasingly isolated world. BiblioCommons is bringing that community online with clever software that powers some of the world’s largest libraries.

We solve big, hairy, interesting technical challenges everyday. With 6 million monthly users in 4 countries, we build software that is user-friendly for a multitude of ages and demographics at a massive scale, and we’re looking for a design leader to join our team.

Head of Design

Libraries are some of North America’s architectural marvels — gorgeous, carefully thought-through spaces for learning. It’s time the online spaces for libraries lived up to their physical counterparts— and that’s where you come in.

As the Head of Design, you will foster a design-focused culture at BiblioCommons, working cross-functionally with the product and engineering leadership on vision and strategy. Libraries are unique, and our software needs to be accessible to a wide range of users including folks who are differently abled and have low literacy.

We are looking for a person, not a checklist. Below is an outline of the types of experience we’d like you to have.

You will:

  • Build and lead a world class UI/UX team at BiblioCommons
  • Sit on the executive team, collaborating on high level company strategy and vision
  • Shape the design culture at BiblioCommons, collaborating with product and engineering teams to champion user-focused design
  • Facilitate processes that support user research, testing, and data collection to inform thoughtful design decisions
  • Be responsible for ensuring the user interface elements are consistent, and developing out a component library to guide your team
  • Design systems that meet inclusivity and accessibility standards
  • Ship products with speed and efficiency

About you:

  • You have 5-10 years of UX experience with a history of excellent work
  • You have a proven track record of leadership, with experience managing teams and mentoring junior and intermediate employees
  • You have a deep understanding of engineering methodologies such as agile and waterfall, and experience building effective design processes within them
  • Analysis isn’t enough — you can demonstrate how to translate UX analysis into performant, beautiful interaction and user interface design
  • You are extremely user-focused, putting an emphasis on iterative processes that include user testing and experimentation
  • You’ve shipped beautifully designed features to solve complex user needs
  • You are emotionally intelligent, and can empathize with our diverse user base
  • You care about lifelong learning, and building accessible 21st century learning communities

BiblioCommons is an equal opportunity employer. Accommodations are available upon request to support your participation during all stages of the recruitment process.
